Discover Medicube Hongdae Flagship Store: Inside APR's Iconic Pink Facade Experience
Is Medicube Hongdae a pop-up or a permanent store?
It is a permanent flagship store, which I initially assumed was not the case, so it's important to clarify this.
Medicube Hongdae has been operating since 2024. APR expanded it from one floor to two and reopened it on 29 July 2026, after announcing the renewal on 28 July. No Korean sources refer to this store as a pop-up. The confusion stems from APR having a separate Hongdae pop-up in June 2023, before the permanent store's opening, leading to some later misinterpretations.
This distinction alters the criteria: a pop-up is judged by its spectacle, whereas a flagship is evaluated by its ability to attract repeat visitors.

What did APR change in the July 2026 renewal?
The store expanded from one floor to two, transforming into a flagship that merges sales with experience.
The ground floor features the main skincare products, while the second floor offers the complete skincare range and a hands-on area for AGE-R beauty devices, along with selections from APR's perfume and lifestyle brand FORMENT.
This is not an isolated case. Medicube already operates flagships in Dosan and, since December 2025, in Seongsu — the trade press refers to Seongsu as the third experiential flagship. Medicube's offline presence began with Hyundai Pangyo in 2022. This model is being implemented more widely.
What does the exterior actually do?
It captures attention, and it does so exceptionally well.
The store is located near Hongik University Station Exit 9 in Mapo-gu. APR has designed the exterior with what the company calls a sculptural form reminiscent of skin cells — from the pavement, it features a stack of oversized pink cushioned blocks beneath a two-story glass box, with an AGE-R billboard as tall as the building.
People pause. People take photos. When I returned to the crossing at four that afternoon, it was busy enough that the building was accomplishing acquisition work more cost-effectively than any media purchase.

What is actually inside the store?
This is a well-designed conversion floor. I want to be specific rather than vague because "nothing special" is often said by those who haven't looked closely.
The shelving is organized by ingredient and concern, with labels in English: PDRN, kojic acid, hypochlorous, TXA, and EGF, focusing on skin barrier support, dark spot and wrinkle care, lifting and radiance, exfoliation, and acne care.
One wall features a numbered routine — step one being a hero-ingredient serum, step two a capsule cream for uneven tone — next to a shelf simply marked as best seller. A card near the entrance promotes a "Popular Skin Care Discount Event" in Korean, Chinese, and English, with five different bundles all priced at 28,900 won. Another counter displays SPECIAL PRICE FOR 2 PURCHASES. Gift sets are priced at 59,900 won. A small sign pairs two products as a "Synergy Item".

The device counter showcases the AGE-R Booster Pro X2 on a pedestal, with its modes listed beside it and testers along the front rail.
Five different bundles, three languages.
Who is the Medicube Hongdae store designed for?
Not for me, which explains my brief six-minute visit.
Everything I've described is deliberate. It's a carefully designed system, with each element removing barriers to purchase: language, options, decision fatigue, and price uncertainty. According to APR, around 60 percent or more of the store's purchasing customers in the first half of 2026 were foreigners. These were actual buyers, not just visitors — a more complex and interesting statistic.
The space caters to someone already familiar with the brand, likely via their phone, with twenty minutes to spare and a suitcase weight limit. It functions like a duty-free counter with enhanced lighting and is expertly designed.
The arrangement is by ingredient and concern, in English — following a dispensary logic rather than a narrative one.

So what is missing?
Judge it by APR's statements instead of mine.
An APR representative, discussing the renewal, mentioned that Medicube Hongdae attracts many visitors, including a significant number of foreign customers, and that the renovation aimed to enhance the brand experience in a more comfortable setting. That is the company's declared objective. So, how is the brand experience?
Brand experience and efficient transactions are distinct concepts, and the latter does not contribute to the former. A bundle priced at 28,900 won is merely a purchase, not a memorable experience. There was nothing on that floor that explained why the building's exterior appears as it does—nothing linked the skin-cell sculpture to PDRN or suggested that the company promotes dermatological logic rather than aesthetics.
The only item in the room that wasn't focused on making a sale was a pair of giant bears, and the bears conveyed nothing about the brand.

Why does this matter most for the AGE-R devices?
A device is the one item that a shelf cannot sell.
Skincare products sell well from a shelf, but a beauty device does not. It is an unfamiliar item with a price that requires justification, and demonstration is key to its sales. The device area is the only part of this store that cannot be replicated by an aisle in a downtown duty-free shop.
On the second floor, I discovered a plinth and a list of modes.
The device is the one item here that a shelf cannot sell — it is displayed on a plinth with a mode list.

What should a brand take from this?
A distinctive exterior captures attention, which is both limited and costly, and APR has managed to secure it effectively.
However, attention only translates into brand value if the interior offers something meaningful. Currently, the exterior and interior are sending different messages. The outside serves as a brand asset, while the inside functions as a sales asset. The building communicates the former.
If you're investing in a facade that captures attention, ensure you have a clear follow-up message. At Medicube Hongdae, the initial impression is excellent, but a follow-up was not evident even after six minutes of observation.
Since Dosan and Seongsu locations already exist and more are planned, it's better to address this at the template level rather than individually for each store.
The exterior achieves customer acquisition more cost-effectively than any media buy.
